What is Dry Rot?

Dry Rot main purpose is to dry out and remove the moisture from the wood, a good indication of Dry Rot is the affected wood itself. The wood will look dried out and would have shrunk as a result. The main way to tell Dry Rot is that the wood looks cuboidal in shape.

The Dry Rot Cycle

Mycelium Growth

Mycelium growth will appear a white silky looking substance, which has the ability to spread across building materials in search of food source (wood).

Fruiting Body (Sporophore)

The fruiting body is easy to identify, with its flat ‘pizza like’ appearance. Fruiting bodies are mainly rusty red in colour (which are the spores). The spores can be a first indication that dry rot is present.

Dry Rot Smell

The most common way to tell if there is dry rot is the smell, which is normally a damp musty smell.
